Free Screening Wednesdays
Why should you get a blood glucose screening at Baptist Express Care?
A blood glucose screening is the simplest way to identify your risk of diabetes. During our free screening days in our clinic, we provide a quick finger-stick to test your blood glucose level. We will then be able to help you decide if you need further testing now, if you should just get tested in several months, or if you can wait a year. We can test your blood glucose any time of day, but in the morning before you have had anything to eat or drink would be the best time.
It is especially important to be screened if you have:
- a family history of diabetes
- if you are overweight
- if you are not physically active
- if you have high blood pressure
- if you are over 45 years old
- if you have a history of gestational diabetes
- if you are African American, Asian American, Latino/Hispanic-American or Pacific Islander
What is diabetes?
When working properly, your body breaks down the food you eat and combines it with insulin to enter your cells to give your body energy. When you have diabetes, your body either doesn’t produce enough insulin to combine with the food you eat or does not use insulin properly to turn the food you eat into a source of energy for your body. This can cause the amount of “sugar” in your blood to be high.
Having diabetes greatly increases your chances of having heart disease or stroke. Diabetes can also cause damage to your eyes, nerves and kidneys. Getting early and good control of your diabetes is key to prevent organ damage.
Please stop by any Baptist Express Care the 1st Wednesday of every month to take part in our free screening days!
